What does "don't book blind" mean?
In plain terms
Don't pay for a hotel or rental without first checking where else you could book the same stay.
What it means
"Don't book blind" is the consumer principle of comparing booking routes before paying for a hotel or rental. It means taking a short step after finding a stay to check whether the same property is bookable through other legitimate channels - such as the property's own site, the owner's page, a local manager or another OTA - and whether those channels offer better terms, lower fees, more flexible cancellation or other advantages. The phrase was coined by JustBooking.ai to name this pre-booking comparison behaviour.
Why it matters
Most travellers book on the first platform where they find the stay they want. That can work out well, but it can also mean missing a lower fee on a direct channel, better cancellation terms through a different OTA, or a loyalty benefit that only applies when booking directly. The check does not always reveal a better option - but it takes only a few minutes and gives you confidence that the route you chose was an informed one.
Example
A traveller finds an apartment in Amsterdam on a short-term rental platform and is about to pay. Instead of paying immediately, they spend a few minutes searching for the property on another platform and checking whether the host has a direct booking link. They find the same apartment listed with a lower service fee on a second platform. By not booking blind, they saved the time it would have taken to dispute a fee later and paid less for the same stay.
