What is a same-stay check?
In plain terms
Making sure you are comparing the same stay across booking channels, not a similar one.
What it means
A same-stay check compares multiple booking channels for the exact same property, room type and dates. It is the discipline of confirming that any differences you find in price, fees or terms are genuinely between booking routes - not between different rooms, different properties or different availability windows. OTAs and direct sites sometimes display the same property at different rates or with different terms, and a same-stay check makes those differences visible.
Why it matters
Without controlling for the same property and room type, price differences can be meaningless or misleading. A same-stay check gives you an honest comparison. It also helps reveal when a property is listed on multiple platforms, which can mean different fees, different cancellation windows or different payment terms for an identical night's stay.
Example
A traveller finds a villa in Tuscany on Airbnb. They then check Vrbo and the owner's own website for the same villa on the same dates. One platform charges a higher service fee; another offers a slightly lower nightly rate. Because the traveller confirmed it is the same villa and the same dates, the comparison is valid and they can make an informed choice about which route to use.
