How to check a hotel before booking
When you have found the hotel you want, it is worth checking the booking route before paying. Direct, OTA and loyalty options can each offer different prices, perks and terms. A few minutes of comparison can make a real difference.
Quick answer
Check the official hotel site for member rates, loyalty points and direct perks such as breakfast or late checkout. Then compare an OTA for cancellation flexibility, rewards and total price. Neither route is always better - compare both before paying.
Why hotel-specific checks matter
Hotels are distributed across many booking channels at once. The same room may appear on the official hotel website, Booking.com, Expedia, Agoda and other platforms, sometimes with different rates or terms. The hotel's own site may have a member rate not visible on OTAs, or a loyalty programme that adds real value for frequent guests.
At the same time, OTAs may offer cancellation flexibility, pay-at-property options or rewards that the direct site does not match. The best route depends on your specific dates, status and what you need from the stay.
Hotel booking checklist
- Find the official hotel website and check for member rates or sign-up discounts
- Look for a hotel loyalty programme and estimate the points value
- Check whether direct perks apply - breakfast, room upgrade, late checkout or parking
- Compare the final checkout total on at least one OTA including all taxes and fees
- Read the cancellation deadline carefully on each route
- Check whether pay-later or pay-at-property is available on any route
- Verify the hotel's official domain before entering payment details
- Look for a best-rate guarantee and read the conditions before relying on it
Finding the official hotel site
Search the hotel name plus "official site" or "direct booking". Look for the brand domain rather than a third-party booking engine disguised as the hotel. Independent hotels often use a booking engine such as Booking.com's Book Direct or SiteMinder - these are still direct routes. Chain hotels usually have a brand site with a loyalty login.
Be cautious of look-alike domains and paid search ads that impersonate the official site. Check the URL carefully before entering any payment details.
